“And the horses are off!!!” Meet the Horsehead Nebula (IC 434) in pursuit of the Flame Nebula (NGC 2024). This iconic pair is located around the star Altinak in Orion’s Belt (constellation of Orion). The Horsehead Nebula, which is located some 1,500 light years away from Earth, is part of large, dark, molecular cloud. The red glow is as a result of hydrogen gas predominantly behind the nebula, while the darkness of the ‘horsehead’ is caused mostly by thick interstellar dust.
